Variegated Smooth Agave

Variegated Smooth Agave

Agave desmettiana variegata

This fast-growing accent plant resembles octopus agave, but is smaller in stature. The variegated form is similar in all respects to the species, but has a small band of yellow along the leaf edges. The soft, fleshy light green leaves generally have smooth edges and a stout terminal spine. While it can tolerate full sun and reflected heat, in the
low deserts it looks more attractive in filtered shade. In coastal regions, it handles full sun easily. This agave needs well-drained soil, and can be planted in the ground or in containers. Like most agaves, it blooms only once, and then dies. How-ever, this plant produces an abundance of small “pups”, to keep the population going.
